YOUTH SERVICES DIRECTOR

 

Basic Function:

The Youth Services Director, under the direction of the Madison County Library System Director, is in charge of all aspects of services to children and youth for the library system. The Youth Services Director participates in the planning, implementing and monitoring of all programs, collection development and budgeting for Youth Services. This person works with all MCLS branches, as well as schools and community groups, to develop and expand the library system’s services for children and young adults, as well as special needs programming for children and young adults.  The Youth Services Director is a member of the Executive Planning Committee, which is responsible for the development of policies, procedures, goals and objectives, and planning for the library system and serves as a liaison to the Camden Public Library.

 

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

Master's Degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA accredited library school with emphasis in children's and young adult services. Applicants actively working toward a MLIS at an accredited institution with at least two years of supervisory experience in library services will be considered. Prefer 3 years of experience in services to toddlers, children and young adults. Position requires basic knowledge of children's books and literature. Also requires excellent oral and written communication skills, ability to work with the public, familiarity with library databases, computer software, word processing and the Internet.

 

Essential duties and responsibilities:

 

  • Responsible for maintaining an up-to-date knowledge in all areas of youth services, in order to provide assistance and advice to patrons, staff, and library administration
  • Develops and coordinates all library services for children and young adults including special needs programming
  • Schedule and publicize children’s and young adult programming
  • Provide support and assistance to Children’s Specialists with their programs
  • Schedule additional outreach including bookmobile and special needs programs throughout the year
  • Participates in planning and implementing strategies to enhance services, library collections and staff development
  • Develops and interprets policies and procedures with approval of Library Director
  • Prepares preliminary budget; tracks and monitors expenditures on an ongoing basis for youth services system-wide
  • Coordinates and implements system-wide collection development of all youth services materials. Purchases materials and supervises all print and non-print material acquisitions within branches. Researches and initiates new services and programs for Youth Services
  • Applies for grants and stipends in support of Youth Services
  • Plans and coordinates system-wide policies/growth as member of Executive Planning Committee with the Director and Branch Managers. Interviews, hires and supervises Youth Services staff, monitors and maintains performance levels of Youth Services staff
  • Coordinates and monitors implementation of story time programs, summer reading, special needs programming and other special events
  • Supervises system-wide printing of library publications for Youth Services; prepares and reviews publicity concerning Youth Services events
  • Conducts in-service training for library staff
  • Holds monthly meetings of Youth Services staff for exchange of information
  • Attends meetings of the Library Board, County Board of Supervisors, Friends of the Library, Mississippi Library Commission, and other meetings, as necessary
  • Represents library system at schools, community events or professional association meeting.
  • Prepares statistical reports as needed for library system.

Special Requirements:

Performance of the essential duties of this position includes the following physical demands and/or working conditions:

Due to the nature of working with children on a daily basis, this position requires physical effort in performing story-times and other youth services programs, such as puppet shows and reader’s theaters.

 

Other requirements include the ability to exert a small amount of physical effort in light work involving stooping and bending, and carrying items weighing up to 20 lbs; moving from one area of the office to another; sufficient hand/eye coordination to perform skilled repetitive movements, such as the use of calculators or other office equipment and supplies. May require the ability to climb ladders or step stools, push or pull book carts, lift and carry books or move boxes of materials of considerable weight from one location to another. Tasks require visual perception, discrimination, and oral communications ability. Tasks are regularly performed without exposure to adverse environmental conditions.
