Technology Programming Specialist, Admin


Basic Function:

The Technology Programming Specialist, under the direction of the Madison County Library System Director, is in charge of all aspects of technology programming services to adults and youth for the library system. The Technology Programming Specialist participates in the planning, implementing, monitoring and budgeting of all technology programs, including the digital lab and bookmobile. This person works with all MCLS branches, as well as schools and community groups, to develop and expand the library system’s technology programming for adults and youth.  The Technology Programming Specialist is a member of the Executive Planning Committee, which is responsible for the development of policies, procedures, goals and objectives, and planning for the library system. This position may require occasional nights and Saturdays.


Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

Master's Degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA accredited library school with experience in children and young adult services or similar education and experience required. Applicants actively working toward a MLIS at an accredited institution with at least two years of supervisory experience in libraries will be considered. Prefer 3 years of technology programming experience in services to youth and adults with demonstrated program development skills. An extensive knowledge of technology programming trends and services preferred.  Familiarity with Adobe software, Coding and CAD software a plus.  Also requires excellent oral and written communication skills, ability to work with the public, familiarity with library databases, computer software, word processing and the Internet.


Essential duties and responsibilities:

  • Responsible for maintaining an up-to-date knowledge in all areas of technology programming services, in order to provide assistance and advice to patrons, staff, and library administration
  • Schedule and publicize programming, including the digital lab, under the direction of the MCLS Director
  • Teach and coordinate technology related classes for public and staff
  • Provide support and assistance to Children’s Specialists with their programs
  • Schedule additional outreach programs, including the bookmobile along with the Youth Services Director, throughout the year
  • Assist in the planning and implementation of the annual Summer Reading Program
  • Represent library system at schools, community groups and events
  • Attend staff meetings and share/exchange information with Youth Services staff
  • Participate in professional development workshops and seminars


Salary & Benefits

This is a full-time, non-exempt, permanent position. Salary is commensurate with education and experience. A comprehensive state benefits plan includes paid holidays and sick leave, health and life insurance, basic dental and vision insurance, state retirement, and deferred compensation.

Special Requirements:

Performance of the essential duties of this position includes the following physical demands and/or working conditions:

Due to the nature of working with children on a daily basis, this position requires physical effort in performing story-times and other youth services programs, such as puppet shows and reader’s theaters.


Other requirements include the ability to exert a small amount of physical effort in light work involving stooping and bending, and carrying items weighing up to 20 lbs; moving from one area of the office to another; sufficient hand/eye coordination to perform skilled repetitive movements, such as the use of calculators or other office equipment and supplies. May require the ability to climb ladders or step stools, push or pull book carts, lift and carry books or move boxes of materials of considerable weight from one location to another. Tasks require visual perception, discrimination, and oral communications ability. Tasks are regularly performed without exposure to adverse environmental conditions.
